Western Maine is home to many fine brook trout ponds as well as it’s famous rivers. It’s ironic that these days most anglers seem to focus all their attention on the area rivers, when it was the lakes and ponds that first brought anglers flocking to the area in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The Rangeley Region has a mix of wild and stocked brook trout ponds. These ponds fish well from ice-out in early May through early summer, and then again in the fall. Some of these ponds (primarily stocked or mixed stocked/wild trout) have an extended season through the fall, with some staying open even through November. Few anglers think of fishing brook trout in the cold of late October and November, but it can be a truly unforgettable experience.
